Darren Westlund lives and works in Manhattan as a photographer and digital artist in partnership with the Chelsea digital imaging studio, Vis Vitae. In the past year he has worked on major ad campaigns for Nike, Intel, Motorola, Calvin Klein, Heineken, Glenlivet, Bacardi, Procter & Gamble, and the Wall Street Journal, to name but a few.... From 1999 to 2002, Westlund was employed as one of the senior digital artists at Pier 59 Studios, the famed 70,000 square-foot photography and multimedia complex at Chelsea Piers. His clients there included Vogue, HBO, Newsweek, Victoria's Secret, Izod, Hugo Boss, Ralph Lauren and the photographers Marco Glaviano, Claus Wickrath, Hans Neleman, Russell James, George Holz and Albert Watson, among others. Prior to moving to Manhattan, Westlund was the Director of Digital Art at Studio 3, Inc. in Seattle -- the Northwest's largest commercial photography studio. His Seattle clients included Microsoft, Intel, Starbucks, Pendleton, Bank of America, American Express, Kenworth, Freightliner, Hitachi, Hewlett Packard, Fluke, Attachmate, Labtec, Ride, K2, the Seattle Supersonics, the Portland Trailblazers and Bill Nye the Science Guy. He was responsible for most of the final art on Microsoft's Office 97 line of products and he produced calendars for both Kenworth and Freightliner in 1999. A calendar of his own work, from his Urban Angels series of photographs, was also published in 1999. Preceding his six years in Seattle, Westlund was Creative Director of The Cambria Independent, a community newspaper on the central coast of California. His photographs and interviews with local eccentrics (including William Randolph Hearst Jr.) were later published in a book called Cambria Treasures. Westlund was also one of the original artists shown in The Vault Gallery when it opened in 1990; his photographs continue to be shown there to this day. He has also exhibited at The Cornerstone Gallery in Beverly Hills, Viewpoint Gallery in Carmel, and Swanson Art Gallery at Ghiradelli Square in San Francisco. |
