PHOTO ILLUSTRATION FOR NEWSWEEK
Photography : Hans Neleman Digital Art : Darren Westlund Our job this time was to come up with a series of three photos for an article about The Wireless Family of the Future. There was some vague talk about data clouds following everyone around, connected to Personal Digital Assistants and wireless toasters and so on. It inspired the usual thoughts about the internet as a metaphor for the hive-mind or the universal unconscious or whatever you like to tag that particular branch of metaphysical speculation. The first illustration Hans and I came up with was kind of bleak, as you might expect, with a dramatic sky and a H.R. Giger-like foreground. Newsweek said, "No, no... we want it to be happy, with a Magritte-like cloud in the background." So that's what we gave them. We weren't too thrilled about having to make happy photo illustrations, but at least we were able to sneak in the skinny sweatered cat with a halo. |
